What is TDS in Water? What is the Ideal Level for Drinking?

Understanding TDS (Total Dissolved Solids)

TDS stands for Total Dissolved Solids. It refers to the total concentration of dissolved substances in water, including inorganic salts (like calcium, magnesium, potassium, and sodium) and a small amount of organic matter.

What is the Ideal Drinking TDS?

According to health guidelines, the ideal TDS for drinking water should be between 50 ppm and 150 ppm.

  • Below 50 ppm: The water may lack essential minerals and taste flat.
  • 50 - 150 ppm: Excellent for drinking, sweet taste, and healthy mineral balance.
  • 150 - 300 ppm: Acceptable, but might start feeling slightly heavy.
  • Above 300 ppm: Generally considered poor for drinking and can cause gastrointestinal irritation over time.

If your tap water has a TDS of over 300, an RO water purifier is highly recommended. Not sure about your water quality? Call us for a free home TDS check!
